This round's annotated game featured: Tony Leah vs. Brian Cappelletto. Round 5 Though they live two states away, Steve Saul (Arlington, MA) sees and plays with Joey Mallick (Cape Elizabeth, ME) often and Joey visits the Lexington, MA, club where Steve plays weekly. And in the vein of, "I could have stayed home for this kind of treatment," in their matchup this round it was Joey's win, 539-294. Not an ounce of animosty between them, Steve points out Joey's nicer plays: PRowLING, ENTRANTS, OVERHATE, and TRAINEES. On a Joel Sherman (Bronx, NY) vs. Paul Epstein (Keego Harbor, MI) board, I spot: ANAEROBES, STRENGAHS, VISITER, CHiRPING, and GERUNDS. The game was in progress, but I later learned that it was a 453-419 win for Joel, a rare gem in our community, a former World and National SCRABBLE® Champion. Maddy Golob (Canyon Country, CA) vs. Rafi Stern (Seattle, WA). Mady played TRIAZOLE, BAILERS, and LANNERET for 60. Rafi played PEEPiNG, UNITEDLY, and FILETED through the second E, creating AL/BE/AT/ED for 45. He held an unplayable bingo, INDOOR?, on his last rack, but it mattered not,as the game was pretty much decided by then. Rafi's win, 409-362. In the after-game chat, Mady slapped open her PDA and used LAMPWords to check plays she might have missed. I see a Ruth Hamilton (Lake Oswego, OR) vs. Mark Edelson (Toronto ON) board as it is being picked up and note Ruth's REgICIDES and THROES. It was Ruth's win, 390-348. A close win, 340-334, with Al DeMers (Sparks, NV) defeating Andy Saunders (Guelph ON). I think the win is pretty much attributable to Al's ADROITeR. The gals faced on in div 1 this round: Lisa Odom (St. Louis Park, MN) vs. Jan Dixon (Newark, DE). The game is in progress, but I can read their scoresheets. Jan's better plays to that point: TREENAIL and UNCUREd. Lisa's better plays: SOLARIA, JArGONED, and the double-double non-bingo ADVISEE through the I. It was Lisa's win, 400-383. Robert Crowe (Fort Wayne, IN) sees me and confesses that he just played a 117-point play wihth a phoney. He added an S to PRONATE on the board by playing BESPECKLE* from the BE. Nines that have been seen so far by Steve Grob (Fenton, MI) and mentioned to me: JALAPENoS through the LA by Jeff Reeves (Woodworth, LA) in round 3 and MUTILATES from the MU by Robert Kahn (Plantation, FL) in round 4. |
