Round 7

Andy Saunders (Guelph ON) caught his opponent, Aditya Kini (Indianapolis, IN), with 7 tlles on his rack: ZXIOOEG for a total of 48 points. Despite this, Andy still lost, 401-441.

CORNMEALS through the OR for 86, a play I like, but it wasn't nice enough for Phil Wertheimer (Short Hills, NJ) who still lost, 358-427, to Tom Kowalik (Schaumburg, IL) who came on strong this round. Tom played ZONE for 49, STORIEd for 73, HELIX for 51, JANTY for 30. All about Tom, I'd say. The coincidence of numbers has them in a virtual tie, however. They are both 6-1 and Tom is +312 and Phil is +311!

We think a div 4 player, Ida Scaglione (Tonawanda, NY) misread the schedule and thought we only had six games today. Poor Hubert Van Tol (Rochester, NY) garnered an unexpected bye.

James L Kille (Philadelphia, PA) had a big win against Bradley Whitmarsh (Attleboro, MA) this round, 517-353. I see Bradley's ORGANONS, and James' BELIEF/ES/LA/IN/ED/FE for 49 points and CUTEsIER through the second E.

Spent a few minutes chatting with Mike Whiteoak (United Kingdom). He is seemingly undiscouraged by his first day playing in a US tournament. His only win was a bye, but I can say one thing for him. He is surely getting a lot of exercise going back and forth to that challenge machine! My notes mention the word BROIDER played to the R for 20 points. We'll all be left to wonder why.

Dan Sereduick (Baltimore, MD) played pavement to Ruth Hamilton (Lake Oswego, OR) in the driverseat of a steamroller. She creamed him, 578-269. It is almost humorous, but this score was achieved only after Dan bingoed out with GRANITE! She opened with TOASTER, her second play was THORAXeS, and her third BANDIED. Dan runs down his scoresheet on her scores and reads out, "40 40 30 40 30." It seems like a great moment of Zen for Ruth!

Worth noting: our sole undefeated player at the end of day 1 is div 5's Victor Li (Columbia, SC) at 7-0 +574. Five players are a game away. Five players are tied at 6-1 in div 4: Tom Kowalik (Schaumburg, IL), Phil Wertheimer (Short Hills, NJ), Diana Ittner (Brookfield, WI), Jeremy Jeffers (Milford, CT), and Laura Landsbaum (The Woodlands, TX). Carlene Wallis (Sparks, NV), at 6.5-.5, is one half a game ahead of the pack of 6-1 folks in div 3: Pete Zeigler (Medina, OH), Michael Wolfberg (Westford, MA), Maureen Kennerk (Hicksville, OH), Chad Hopper (Austin, TX), George Asaka (Omaha, NE), Carlynn Mayer (Sparks, NV) (Carlene's twin sister!), and Cheryl Cadieux (Grand Forks, ND). Div 2, has five players in the 6-2 spot: Ruth Hamilton (Lake Oswego, OR), Jean McArthur (Austin, TX), Mark Fidler (Waltham, MA), Alex Fiszbein (South Lyon, MI), and Daniel Schey (Detroit, MI). Five players vie for the top spot in div 1, too: Brian Cappelletto (Chicago, IL), Joe Edley (Coram, NY), Lester Schonbrun (Oakland, CA), Nathan Benedict (Tucson, AZ), Orry Swift (Dayton, TX), and Panupol Sujjayakorn (Thailand).

More tomorrow!
